The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase has recommended approval for importing five additional LNG cargoes to meet the country’s growing energy demand.
Seven procurement proposals were presented in the meeting, including LNG imports under different methods.
Two cargoes will be purchased directly from Switzerland-based company SOCAR Trading SA. Three additional cargoes will be imported under RFQ method from BP Singapore Private Limited and TotalEnergies Gas & Power Limited.
The cargoes are expected to arrive between June 26–27, June 30–July 1, and July 6–7.
The total cost of importing these five LNG cargoes is estimated at over 23.72 billion taka.
Officials said Bangladesh is increasingly dependent on imported LNG to meet gas demand, with Qatar being the main long-term supplier.
Due to global geopolitical tensions and uncertainty in maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, alternative energy sourcing is being prioritized to ensure energy security.
