Electricity retail prices in the country have been increased after 27 months. Under the new decision, the average price per unit has been raised from 9.11 taka to 10.63 taka, an increase of 1.52 taka.

The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced the new tariff at a press conference, effective from June 1.

According to BERC sources, this is the highest single-phase increase in electricity prices so far. The price hike will affect all categories of consumers, including residential, industrial, agricultural, and commercial users.

The minimum lifeline tariff is set at 5.32 taka per unit, while in some cases the maximum tariff has reached 23.81 taka per unit.

Residential consumers will face an average increase of 16.68%, with monthly bills rising by 15% to 20% depending on usage.

Industrial and commercial sectors will also experience higher costs, with different tariff structures based on peak and off-peak hours.

Officials said wholesale electricity prices have increased by 19.85%, and transmission charges have also been revised.

They further estimated that despite adjustments, the government may need to provide subsidies of around 410 billion taka annually.

Experts warn that this price increase may raise production costs, potentially affecting inflation, food prices, and industrial output.
