A human chain and protest rally were held at Barishal University demanding justice for the murder of Inqilab Mancha’s convener, Shaheed Sharif Osman bin Hadi. The program was held on Thursday (May 7) in the afternoon in front of Gate No. 3 of the university campus, where students, organization activists, and members of the general public participated.

At first, a human chain was formed. Later, participants brought out a protest procession that paraded through various roads of the campus. The program was moderated by Md. Farhad Hossain. Speakers included Osman bin Hadi’s sister Masuma Hadi, member secretary of Inqilab Mancha Iftekhar Sayem, Md. Belal, Al Imran, and others.

The speakers alleged that despite a long time passing since the killing, there has been no visible progress in the investigation. They criticized the inactivity of law enforcement agencies in arresting the real perpetrators and demanded swift justice. They said that delays in the justice process would further increase public anger.

During the human chain, Iftekhar Sayem said Osman Hadi was an active voice against authoritarianism. He alleged that even after being shot in public, the killers have not been brought to justice. He further said that people are becoming frustrated with justice due to delays in resolving various high-profile murder cases in the country.

He referred to the Sagar-Runi murder case, saying that repeated delays in investigation reports are highlighting a culture of impunity. He commented that similar delays are also being seen in Osman Hadi’s murder case.

Osman Hadi’s sister Masuma Hadi said they did not come only to express grief but to demand justice. She demanded that those involved in the killing be quickly brought under the law and given exemplary punishment.

She further said that Osman Hadi used to speak about justice and people’s rights. Therefore, ensuring justice for his murder is the responsibility of the state, she said.

Participants in the program said that to end the culture of impunity, impartial investigation and speedy trial of all high-profile murder cases are essential.
