Opposition leader Issa Tchatchoua Bakari of Cameroon has unilaterally declared victory in the country’s presidential election. In a five-minute video posted on social media on Tuesday, he claimed that the people have elected him as the winner and that this decision should be respected. Although the official results have not yet been announced, Tchatchoua called on Paul Biya, who has been in power for 43 years, to acknowledge defeat over the phone.

In his statement, Tchatchoua said, “The people have cast their votes, and this decision must be respected.” He further stated that the election results represent a clear rebuke to the Biya administration and mark the beginning of a new political era in Cameroon.

The government had already warned that only announcements made by the Constitutional Council will be considered official. Administrative Minister Paul Atanga Nji commented that any unilateral declaration of results would be regarded as “treasonous.”

Tchatchoua, who has received support from Biya’s opposition coalition, called on government institutions and the military to recognize his victory and “stand on the side of the republic.” He added, “Ensure the security and protection of the people, and do not let anyone obstruct this path.”

This marks a new turning point in Cameroon’s long-standing political tensions, with a strong call among the populace for change.
