A federal district court in Northern California, USA, has ruled in favor of the video messaging platform Cameo and ordered OpenAI to stop using the name “Cameo” for its products.

According to the court order, OpenAI was using the name “Cameo” in their AI-powered video generation app Sora 2, a feature that allowed users to insert digital avatars of themselves into AI-generated videos. The court determined that using the same name could create confusion among customers.

The ruling stated that the word “Cameo” is not merely descriptive; rather, it signifies a specific brand. Therefore, OpenAI’s argument that the word was being used in a general sense was not accepted. Previously, in November, the court had issued a temporary injunction, directing OpenAI to refrain from using the term. Following this, the company changed the feature’s name to “Characters.”

Cameo CEO Steven Galanis stated in a press release that the ruling is crucial for protecting the brand recognition they have built over nearly a decade. He noted that thousands of content creators rely on this platform.

Meanwhile, OpenAI issued a statement asserting that they do not agree with the idea that ownership of the term “Cameo” can be monopolized, and they will present their stance through legal proceedings.

Recently, OpenAI has been involved in several intellectual property-related legal complexities. The company faces copyright and branding disputes with various creative artists, publishing houses, and tech organizations. Earlier this month, information emerged that OpenAI is stepping back from “IO” branding for an upcoming hardware product. Additionally, a legal dispute is ongoing over the name “Sora” for their video generation app with a digital library application.

Analysts believe that although the AI sector is expanding rapidly, tech companies are facing increasing legal challenges regarding brand identity and intellectual property protection.
