Opposition leader hints at broader political movement after walkout

Following the walkout from the National Parliament, opposition leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Shafiqur Rahman indicated a larger political program involving 11 parties. He stated that they are preparing to take the demand for constitutional reform and other issues to the public.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday afternoon after leaving the parliamentary session, he said that since reforms could not be achieved inside Parliament according to public expectations, they would now take the demand to the people. He made it clear that there is no path forward except through public movement.

Shafiqur Rahman mentioned that the 11 parties would soon meet to determine the next course of action and expressed optimism that they would advance the demands with public support.

Explaining the reason for leaving Parliament, he said the decision followed the lack of effective remedy regarding the convening of the constitutional reform council and the bypassing of their proposal. According to him, this amounts to ignoring public opinion.

He further explained that in the past, referendums in the country determined subsequent steps based on public opinion, but in the current situation, a consensus on an important issue was ignored, conflicting with public expectations.

The opposition leader emphasized that the demand for constitutional reform is not for any individual or group’s interest but aims to ensure good governance and a corruption-free administration. However, the normal legislative process was not allowed to proceed.

Shafiqur Rahman clarified that leaving Parliament does not mean abandoning it—they will continue their responsibilities as part of the legislative body. Simultaneously, they will pursue their demands through political programs outside Parliament. He hinted that their position will be made clear soon, and actions will become visible in the coming days.
