This week, OpenAI and Oracle have made headlines in the market. News of a $300 billion five-year contract caused Oracle’s share price to surge significantly. Analysts believe the deal demonstrates that Oracle continues to play a crucial role in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

Chirag Dekate, Vice President at Gartner, said, “OpenAI is building the world’s most extensive AI supercomputing infrastructure. It’s an unprecedented example of inference scaling on demand.” He added that this deal allows OpenAI to work with multiple cloud providers, reduces risk, and provides greater scaling advantages compared to competitors.

Many analysts were surprised by Oracle’s involvement. However, Dekate believes it is not unexpected. Oracle has previously collaborated with hyperscalers and provides infrastructure for TikTok’s U.S. operations.

Questions regarding power and payment remain in implementing the deal. OpenAI will spend about $60 billion annually on computing with Oracle and invest $10 billion with Broadcom for custom AI chip development.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has invested in energy companies such as Oklo, Helion, and X-Grid. However, OpenAI itself has not made large-scale direct investments—this may change with the implementation of the 4.5 gigawatt computing deal.

Experts believe OpenAI’s “asset-light” strategy will satisfy investors and align with valuations of software-based AI startups, while legacy tech companies continue to bear costly infrastructure burdens.

Key Highlights:

  • Oracle’s share price surged after the deal

  • Oracle’s collaboration to meet OpenAI’s computing needs

  • Challenges in power and electricity supply

  • “Asset-light” strategy alongside the 4.5 gigawatt computing deal
