With the holy month of Ramadan approaching, the government has significantly reduced import duties to stabilize the dates market. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) announced a 40% reduction in import duty on dates.

In a notification issued on Wednesday (24 December), NBR stated that the decision aims to ensure sufficient supply and keep prices within the reach of ordinary consumers, considering increased demand during Ramadan.

According to the notification, customs duty on date imports has been reduced from 25% to 15%, effective until 31 March 2026. Additionally, the advance income tax provision for all fruit imports, including dates, has been reduced from 10% to 5%. The 50% waiver on advance income tax provided last year is maintained for the current fiscal year. NBR expects these measures to ensure adequate supply and affordable prices during Ramadan.
