In the first quarter of the 2025–26 fiscal year, revenue collection has reached a new high. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) reported that from July to September, total revenue collection amounted to BDT 908.25 billion, marking the highest revenue ever collected in the first three months of any fiscal year in Bangladesh's history.
In a government statement on Friday (17 October), NBR said that revenue collection increased by BDT 152.70 billion compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year, reflecting a growth rate of 20.21%.
According to NBR, the largest contribution in the current quarter came from domestic VAT, totaling BDT 348.19 billion, a 29.74% increase compared to the previous year.
Significant gains were also seen in income tax and travel tax, which generated BDT 284.78 billion, up 18.26% from the same period last year.
Additionally, import and export duties saw substantial growth, collecting BDT 275.28 billion, which is 11.74% higher than in the previous fiscal year.
Revenue collection has been on a steady upward trend in recent years. In the first three months of FY 2024–25, revenue amounted to BDT 755.54 billion, while in FY 2023–24 it was BDT 760.68 billion.
NBR attributed this success to expanded tax coverage, strengthened compliance, anti-evasion measures, and effective revenue recovery. The agency emphasized that coordinated field-level initiatives and technology-driven management played a crucial role in boosting revenue.
In a statement, NBR said, “Our goal is not just to increase revenue but also to enhance taxpayer confidence and ensure fair revenue management. We are committed to accelerating this growth trajectory.”
Economists say that such a positive start to the fiscal year signals promising prospects for the government’s overall financial management and economic growth.
