Meta and the startup MidJourney have announced a partnership to advance their AI image and video generation technology. Alexander Wang, Meta’s Chief AI Officer, shared on Threads Friday that Meta’s research team will collaborate with MidJourney on developing future AI models and products.

Wang stated, “To deliver the best products, we need to work on multiple fronts—world-class talent, high-level computing power, and collaboration with the industry’s top players.”

Through this partnership, Meta aims to create products that can compete with AI image and video models such as OpenAI’s Sora, Black Forest Labs’ Flux, and Google’s VQ-VAE. Last year, Meta launched its own AI image generation tool, “Imagine,” for Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. Additionally, Meta’s AI video tool, “MovieGen,” helps users create videos from prompts.

Founded in 2022, MidJourney quickly gained recognition for its unique and realistic AI image generation style. By 2023, MidJourney’s revenue was estimated to be around $200 million. The startup offers monthly subscriptions starting at $10, with premium plans up to $120. In June, MidJourney released its first AI video model, V1.

Meta’s initiative comes amid lawsuits filed against MidJourney by Disney and Universal, alleging the startup used copyrighted works to train its AI models. However, courts have recently tended to side with technology companies in such cases.

The Meta-MidJourney partnership marks a new wave of innovation in the tech world and opens a fresh chapter of competition in the AI industry.
