After a long hiatus, India’s popular singer Kumar Shanu is back in the headlines. He has filed a defamation case in the Mumbai High Court against his ex-wife Rita Bhattacharya, seeking Rs. 30 lakh in damages.

In his petition, Kumar Shanu alleged that Rita Bhattacharya recently made serious and baseless accusations against him in several interviews, harming his personal and professional reputation. He has also requested the removal of the controversial interviews from social media and the internet.

The couple, who divorced nearly two decades ago, came back into the spotlight when Rita claimed in various media outlets that she suffered physical and mental abuse from Kumar Shanu during her pregnancy and was not provided for, forcing her to sell her jewelry to survive. She also alleged extramarital affairs.

Kumar Shanu refuted all allegations as false and deliberate, claiming they were aimed at tarnishing his four-decade-long music career and clean image. The petition also stated that an agreement made at the time of their divorce in 2001 prohibited either party from publicly accusing the other, which Rita allegedly violated.

Kumar Shanu has also issued legal notices to the digital platforms where the interviews were published, warning that legal action would follow if the content is not removed promptly. He had sent the first legal notice to Rita Bhattacharya in September, but no resolution was reached, prompting the court case.
