The future of the Eurovision Song Contest has sparked major debate ahead of an important meeting in Geneva. On Thursday, participating countries and organizers will discuss whether Israel should be allowed to take part in the contest.

Many countries have protested Israel’s participation, citing the ongoing war in Gaza and alleged voting irregularities. Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia have already announced they will boycott if Israel participates. Meanwhile, Germany has indicated it may withdraw if Israel is excluded.

During this year’s Grand Final in Basel, Switzerland, two individuals attempted an attack on stage and tried to cover Israel’s representative Yuval Raphael with paint. Crew members intervened, and the individuals were arrested. Despite these incidents, Raphael won second place after a public vote.

Israel’s victory has sparked reactions from other countries. Accusations arose that Israel ran an extensive advertising campaign to artificially boost its position. Israel denies these claims, maintaining that it has been unfairly targeted by a global campaign of condemnation.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced stricter voting rules to limit government or third-party influence. Under the new rules, each viewer may only cast ten votes, and measures will detect fraudulent or coordinated voting.

Natalia Gorschak, Chairperson of Slovenia’s RTV management board, told BBC, “I think this vote will favor Israel, but we must follow our policies. It’s time to be on the right side of history.”

Eurovision expert Paul Jordan commented, “This is a real crisis for Eurovision and the EBU. There is no clear winner here. A politically neutral contest has now become a political controversy.”

Next year’s 2026 contest will be held in Vienna, where the issue of Israel’s participation remains highly contentious. Spain has already warned it will not participate if Israel is included, while Israel has continued preparations and stated it will fully comply with EBU rules.
