Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has declared that cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, “is no longer relevant” following the reimposition of international sanctions by Western countries.

In a statement to diplomats in Tehran on Sunday, he said that the agreement signed last month in Cairo has effectively become meaningless. The agreement had allowed Tehran to resume inspections and monitoring at its nuclear facilities.

However, Britain, France, and Germany—the three signatories of the 2015 nuclear deal—have reinstated UN sanctions against Iran, accusing it of violating commitments. Araghchi said this step has weakened the role of European countries and will significantly reduce their influence in future negotiations.

He also accused the IAEA of applying double standards, noting that the agency did not condemn Israeli attacks that damaged Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Tehran has emphasized that its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and not intended for weapons production. While some lawmakers have suggested withdrawing from the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty), President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran remains committed to its obligations under the treaty.
