A homicide has been reported on the final day of the Burning Man festival held in the Nevada desert. On Saturday night, as the festival’s iconic wooden “Man” effigy was set ablaze, an adult white male was found dead, lying in a pool of blood, according to the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office.
The identity of the deceased remains unknown. A festival participant discovered the body and alerted the sheriff’s office. Sheriff Jerry Allen confirmed that deputies, Bureau of Land Management rangers, and local rangers immediately secured the scene, while the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office forensic team began collecting evidence.
Burning Man has now become known as a networking hub for Silicon Valley’s tech leaders, attracting notable entrepreneurs such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos. Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin reportedly have an especially deep connection to the festival.
Sheriff Allen noted that “investigating a crime in a city that will be gone by the middle of the week is complicated.” As the festival ends on Monday and 70,000 attendees begin to depart, authorities may need to extend the investigation timeline or impose restrictions on departures to preserve the crime scene.
The sheriff’s office has warned: “Although this act appears to be a singular crime, all participants should remain vigilant about their surroundings and acquaintances.”
