At the G20 summit in South Africa, allied nations of Ukraine gathered to strengthen the U.S.-proposed peace plan for ending the Russia-Ukraine war. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the discussions would support U.S. efforts and outline the next steps.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky warned a day earlier that the country is passing through “one of the most difficult moments in history,” noting that leaked conditions of the U.S. plan appear favorable to Moscow.

Following phone conversations with the French president and German chancellor, Starmer said that allies are united in ensuring “long-term peace” for Ukraine.

Although absent from the G20 summit, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin remain central to the discussions.

Leaked drafts suggest Ukraine may be asked to concede certain territories, reduce its armed forces, and pledge not to join NATO—demands previously rejected.

EU foreign policy chief Kaya Kallas described the situation as “very dangerous,” noting that giving advantages to an aggressive state has no legitimacy.

Starmer stated, “Ukraine has never called for a pause in attacks, but Russia has continually delayed. Sustainable peace requires coordinated effort.”

Putin said the U.S. proposal “could serve as a basis for discussion,” though detailed talks have not occurred. He claimed that Russia is ready to be flexible but retains the capacity to continue military operations.

In a 10-minute speech in Kyiv, Zelensky said Ukraine is under enormous pressure to appear weak or make concessions to allies. He emphasized remaining calm and working with the U.S. and allies to develop alternative proposals.

Leaked reports indicate Ukrainian forces have withdrawn from Russian-controlled Donetsk regions, while Russia maintains control over Donetsk, Luhansk, and annexed Crimea. Security assurances, lifting sanctions, and potential reintegration into the global economy are key issues.

Trump stated that Ukraine must decide by Thanksgiving, warning that delay could lead to further territorial losses. Washington has repeatedly emphasized that the plan was prepared in consultation with Ukraine’s security chief Rustem Umerov.

Russian forces are advancing slowly along the front line, while U.S. advanced weapon supplies remain crucial to Ukraine’s defense.

However, U.S. Vice President Zed Vance remarked, “Providing more money or weapons does not guarantee quick victory—this idea is entirely unrealistic.”
