The Rangpur District Detective Branch (DB) Police have arrested four members of an organized fraud gang for allegedly attempting to help a proxy candidate enter a recruitment examination using a fake admit card for the post of Cadet Assistant Sub-Inspector (Unarmed).

Another member of the gang has been named as an absconding accused.

The arrested individuals are Mohammad Ashraful Islam (21) of Parbatipur in Dinajpur, Tajmilur Rahman (19) of Rangpur, Badsha Masud Alam (48), an employee of the Fire Service and Civil Defence Rangpur office, and Nurul Islam (20). Another Nurul Islam (46) has been listed as a fugitive accused in the case.

Police said DB members were on duty at the main gate of Rangpur Police Lines School and College examination centre on Friday (July 31) at around 4:30 pm. At that time, Ashraful’s suspicious movements led police to question him. After checking his admit card, police confirmed that it was fake.

At the same time, Tajmilur Rahman, who allegedly came to sit for the examination instead of the actual candidate, was also detained.

During preliminary questioning, police learned that a criminal group had taken a large amount of money from Ashraful with promises of securing him a police job.

According to police, Badsha Masud Alam and his associate Nurul Islam promised Ashraful a police job in exchange for Tk 17 lakh. As part of the agreement, Ashraful deposited Tk 2.5 lakh into a Dhaka Bank account from Dinajpur.

Investigators said Ashraful did not participate in the mandatory physical test of the recruitment process but later received a fake admit card through WhatsApp. He attempted to enter the examination centre using that admit card, which exposed the fraud.

Based on Ashraful’s information, DB police arrested Badsha Masud Alam from Jahaj Company Mor area in Rangpur city. Police said they recovered evidence related to fraud, financial transactions, and the creation and supply of fake admit cards from his mobile phone.

During interrogation, Badsha allegedly admitted that he and several others had formed a fraud gang that created fake documents and promised government jobs in exchange for money.

Police also said the gang members used fake identities of senior officials and contacted higher-ranking police officers through mobile phones to gain trust and mislead people.

A case has been filed at Kotwali Metropolitan Police Station.

OC Nazmul Kader said operations are continuing to arrest the absconding accused and identify other members involved in the fraud network.
