Five journalists from Al Jazeera were killed when an Israeli airstrike targeted the journalists’ tent in front of Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital. Among the deceased are renowned reporter Anas Al-Sharif, journalist Mohammad Kuirike, and cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammad Nufal, and Moamen Aliwa. They were stationed at the journalists’ tent near the hospital’s main gate at the time of the strike.

Al Jazeera described the attack as a “deliberate and blatant assault on media freedom.” The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the incident but questioned the validity of Israel’s claims due to a lack of evidence.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) alleged that the slain lead reporter Anas Al-Sharif was the head of a Hamas terrorist cell and responsible for rocket attacks targeting Israeli civilians and soldiers. However, CPJ stated that Israel provided no evidence to support these accusations.

Mohammad Moawad, Al Jazeera’s manager, said that Al-Sharif was a recognized journalist and his only means to inform the world about the situation inside Gaza. The journalists were not at the frontlines of combat but were engaged in direct journalistic work at the time.

Due to restrictions on independent international journalists entering Gaza, most media outlets rely on local reporters. Salah Niyam, director of Al Jazeera’s English division, explained that they verify the information and maintain high standards in their reporting.

Moments before the attack, Anas Al-Sharif posted updates about the situation in Gaza on social media. Later, news of his death was confirmed. Videos released after the strike showed the bodies of the slain journalists being transported.

Al Jazeera reported that seven people in total were killed in Israeli strikes that day. Last year, a similar attack also killed one of their journalists.

UN special rapporteur Irene Khan condemned the killing, calling it “illegal” and a “direct attack on journalists.”

Journalists in Gaza face life-threatening conditions amid ongoing conflict, severe food shortages, and relentless airstrikes. Many continue working tirelessly, often without sufficient food. International human rights groups have warned of a large-scale humanitarian catastrophe in the region.

The current military conflict in Gaza began in October 2023, following a Hamas attack that killed over a hundred Israeli civilians and took many hostage. Since then, Israeli military operations have resulted in thousands of deaths.

Such attacks on journalists have sparked global concern and criticism, with calls for ensuring media safety and urgently resolving the conflict.
