Father, mother, and maternal uncle arrested in Patuakhali for suffocating teenage girl over a love affair

In Bauphal, Patuakhali, police have arrested a teenage girl’s father, mother, and maternal uncle on charges of suffocating her to death over a love affair.

Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (Bauphal Circle) Arif Muhammad Shakur informed reporters at Bauphal Police Station on Wednesday night at 8:15 PM.

Police stated that on the morning of August 23, the body of 14-year-old Urmi Islam was recovered from a canal about one kilometer from her home in Kumbhkhali village. Later, her father, Nazrul Islam, filed a case at the police station against unidentified individuals.

Following investigation, once the motive for the murder was uncovered, police arrested Urmi’s father Nazrul Islam, mother Amena Begum, and maternal uncle Kamal Hossain late Tuesday night. They confessed to the crime and gave statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in court.

Senior ASP Arif Muhammad Shakur stated that Urmi had a romantic relationship with a local young man. On the night of August 20, around 1:30 AM, a dispute arose between her and family members over this relationship. In a fit of anger, the family allegedly grabbed Urmi by the neck, causing her to suffocate and die. After the murder, the father, mother, and maternal uncle allegedly disposed of her body in the canal.

Police investigations by multiple units clarified the circumstances of the murder and led to the arrests. The incident has highlighted the need to strengthen security and public awareness in the area.
