Dhaka – Independent vice president (VP) candidate Jalal Ahmed in the Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU) election has been ordered by the court to be sent to jail. Jalal was arrested in connection with an attempted murder case filed at Shahbagh Police Station after allegedly stabbing his roommate.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka issued the order. After presenting him in court, the police requested that Jalal be kept in custody. The defense side applied for bail, but after hearing both sides, the court directed that he be sent to jail.

Earlier, on Tuesday afternoon, the Dhaka University administration filed an attempted murder case against Jalal at Shahbagh Police Station, alleging he stabbed his roommate. The incident took place late Tuesday night at Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall. The victim, Rabiul Haque, a student of the Political Science Department, was seriously injured. Jalal is a student of the Television and Film Department at the university.

The provost of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall, Md. Sirajul Islam, stated, “Jalal has been expelled from the hall for such violent behavior. Measures will also be taken to cancel his student status.”

Eyewitnesses said that Jalal attacked Rabiul after a long-standing conflict between them. According to Rabiul, Jalal entered his room around 12:30 a.m., turned on the lights, and made noise. When Rabiul asked him to be quiet, Jalal allegedly got angry, calling him an illegal outsider, and attacked him. Rabiul was later able to defend himself.

The university administration’s swift action in this case has emphasized the importance of maintaining security and law and order on campus.
