Dhaka: Due to excessive rainfall, the production of raw chili has decreased across the country, leading to an increase in chili imports from India to meet demand. In the past month alone, 1,521 metric tons of chili have entered the country through the Benapole land port.
However, the price of imported chili in retail markets is high. While the price at Benapole port ranges from 80 to 85 BDT per kilogram, it is being sold in markets for 280 to 300 BDT, causing frustration among buyers.
Hafiz Ahmed, an importer of raw chili at Benapole, said that the chili is being brought from Maharashtra, India. Even after costs, they are selling at low profit, but retail prices are several times higher.
Ziaur Rahman, General Secretary of the Benapole Import-Export Association, said, “If government duties are reduced, import costs will decrease, market prices will drop, and consumers will be able to buy chili at lower prices.”
Local businessman Anand noted, “Imported chilies generally go to divisional and district towns, which drives up local market prices. If imports increase further, prices may stabilize.”
Shyamal Kumar Nath, Assistant Officer at the Benapole Plant Quarantine Center, stated, “Rising demand has increased raw chili imports from India. After rapid inspection and clearance at the port, importers can ensure timely supply to the market.”
