Imran Sherwani, the hockey star who led Great Britain to a gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, has passed away at age 63.
Sherwani scored two goals in the final, helping Great Britain defeat West Germany 3-1. During his second goal, famous BBC commentator Barry Davies remarked, “Where are the Germans? Frankly, nobody cares!”
In 2019, Sherwani was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
Rich Beer, Chief Operating Officer of Great Britain Hockey, said, “Imran Sherwani will forever be remembered as a true icon of England and Great Britain hockey. His talent, leadership, and humility inspired generations of players and fans.”
Sherwani played 94 matches for Great Britain and England and worked as a hockey director at a school in Staffordshire. He came from a sporting family—his father played hockey for Pakistan, and his great-uncles played for Stoke City and Port Vale.
