Intense military clashes in the border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan have increased tensions between the two countries. The Pakistani military has reported that they killed over 200 Afghan fighters in an operation. On the other hand, the Taliban government in Afghanistan claims that 58 Pakistani soldiers were killed and 30 others were injured in the border fighting, and some of Pakistan’s important weapons have fallen into the hands of Afghan forces.

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense spokesperson Enayatullah Khwarizmi stated that Taliban forces launched renewed attacks on Pakistan’s border, capturing three Pakistani posts. Pakistani state media reported that their forces had seized 19 Afghan posts, with Taliban fighters either injured or fleeing.

The border clashes between the two countries come in the context of long-standing tensions in Pakistan-Taliban relations and Pakistan’s accusations that Afghanistan is harboring armed groups responsible for attacks on Pakistan.

Iran, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have called for international intervention to de-escalate the situation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said, “Both sides must exercise restraint, which is crucial for the stability of the region.” Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry also urged both countries to maintain peace.

Analysts say that the tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan will likely deepen the bilateral dispute in the long term. Pakistan has recently faced intense attacks from Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), with 143 attacks across the country in August, killing 194 people and injuring over 200.

Amid the rising tensions, Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi visited India, which has caused concern for Pakistan. Pakistan has accused India of being a key supporter of terrorism in the region, sparking new international tensions.
