Toronto-based AI company Cohere announced on Thursday that it has raised $500 million in new investment, exceeding expectations. With this funding round, the company’s valuation has jumped to $6.8 billion, up from $5.5 billion during a similar funding round last year.
Founded in 2019, Cohere’s co-founder Aidan Gomez is also a co-author of the landmark research paper “Attention Is All You Need,” which laid the foundation for modern artificial intelligence technologies. Rather than consumer-focused models, the company has consistently focused on delivering secure, enterprise-oriented large language models (LLMs).
Cohere has already signed agreements with top corporate clients including Oracle, Dell, Bell, Fujitsu, LG CNS, SAP, and the Royal Bank of Canada. New investors include the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan. In a company press release, Cohere indicated that the demand for security-focused enterprise AI solutions remains insufficiently met in the market.
In addition to funding, Cohere is attracting top talent in the AI industry. Recently, Joel Pinyo, a longtime research lead at Meta, joined as Chief AI Officer. Francois Chadwick, formerly responsible for Uber’s finance division and CFO at Shield AI, has joined as the new Chief Financial Officer.
The new funding round was led by Radical Ventures and Inovia Capital, with participation from previous investors including AMD Ventures, Nvidia, and Salesforce Ventures. However, Oracle, a prior investor, did not participate in this round, and the company has not officially commented on this.
This funding will enable Cohere to further advance the development of secure, enterprise-ready AI solutions.
