Expressing their dissatisfaction with the recent elections of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), 48 clubs across the country have announced a boycott of domestic cricket. At the same time, they have declared Aminul Islam Bulbul, elected as BCB president, to be illegitimate.
At a press conference in Dhaka on Wednesday (October 8), Mohammadan Club councillor Masuduzzaman said, “Our existence has been ignored. Therefore, we have decided to boycott all upcoming competitions.”
The dissenting clubs had previously submitted three demands, requesting the postponement of the BCB elections and reforms in the election process. The demands were:
Extend the term of the current BCB executive committee and announce a new election schedule.
Hand over responsibilities to an ad-hoc committee.
Conduct elections later under the supervision of a newly formed election commission.
Ignoring their demands, former captain Aminul Islam Bulbul was elected president in the October 6 election. Masuduzzaman said, “We have seen many controversial elections, but never a public mockery like this one. Our voices were not heard. That is why we are boycotting domestic cricket.”
Present at the press conference were former captain Tamim Iqbal, Mohammadan Sporting Club official Masuduzzaman, and sports organizer Abdullah Al Fuad Redwan. They all supported the decision and raised questions regarding Bulbul’s legitimacy.
