The National Citizen Party (NCP) has alleged that bricks were thrown at the vehicle convoy carrying its central leaders while returning after a public outreach programme in Jaintapur of Sylhet. A moving vehicle’s glass was shattered in the incident.
The party claimed that NCP central chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary and another person were injured by glass fragments and brick pieces.
However, police from Jaintapur and Shah Paran police stations said they did not receive any information about such an attack within their respective areas.
According to several responsible sources within NCP, the incident took place around 10:45pm on Friday (July 31). Later that night, Nasiruddin Patwary and the party’s northern region chief organizer Sarjis Alam held an emergency press conference after returning to Sylhet Circuit House.
At the press conference, Nasiruddin Patwary alleged that only a few minutes after leaving their programme in Jaintapur with the convoy, a large brick was thrown at their vehicle.
He said the impact shattered the vehicle’s window glass completely.
“The broken glass and brick fragments injured my hand, causing bleeding. Another passenger travelling with us was also injured,” he said.
He added that if the brick had hit someone’s head, it could have caused a major casualty.
The NCP leader alleged that their activists have recently been facing repeated attacks and obstacles.
Expressing concern over his security, he urged law enforcement agencies to ensure a neutral role.
Nasiruddin Patwary further said police patrol teams were present both in front of and behind their convoy, and an Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) protocol was also provided.
He demanded an investigation into how such an incident occurred despite security arrangements and called for identifying those responsible.
Meanwhile, Sylhet district NCP Member Secretary Kamrul Arif said stones or bricks were thrown targeting the moving convoy.
However, he said the identities of those involved could not be confirmed immediately.
Rejecting the allegation, Jaintapur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Molla said NCP leaders’ convoy was escorted safely up to the border area under tight police security.
“No attack took place within the jurisdiction of our police station,” he said.
Shah Paran Police Station also said they had no information about any attack on the NCP convoy in their area.
Earlier, on Thursday (July 30), allegations emerged that a vehicle carrying NCP leader Sarjis Alam was attacked while returning from a programme in Golapganj of Sylhet.
Before that, on Tuesday (July 28), NCP had alleged that its activists were attacked during the party’s July March programme in Habiganj.
NCP has claimed that its recent programmes have been repeatedly obstructed and targeted by attacks. However, no specific evidence or confirmed information regarding the identities of those responsible has been disclosed so far.
