Attempt to Enter Government Facility in Mirzapur, Youth Dies After Mob Beating

A young man named Shukur Ali (25) was killed after being beaten by local residents in Mirzapur of Tangail while allegedly attempting to enter a government facility under construction during daytime. A security guard of the facility was also injured in the incident. Police said several other people fled the scene in a pickup truck.

The incident took place on Friday (July 31) afternoon at the under-construction ‘Road Operational Unit’ facility in Kadim Dhalya area of Mirzapur Upazila, beside the Dhaka-Tangail highway.

The deceased Shukur Ali was the son of Ismail Hossain from Narandia area of Kalihati Upazila.

According to police and local sources, a group of six to seven people arrived at the main gate of the facility in a pickup truck on Friday afternoon. They allegedly attempted to enter the facility forcefully, but security guard Khokon Sheikh stopped them.

At that time, the individuals allegedly assaulted the security guard. Hearing his cries for help, local residents rushed to the spot. Later, locals detained Shukur Ali and beat him. He died at the scene due to the injuries.

The other five to six people who were with him reportedly escaped from the area in the pickup truck.

After receiving information, police from Mirzapur Police Station reached the spot and recovered Shukur Ali’s body. Later, the body was sent to the morgue of Tangail General Hospital for autopsy.

Meanwhile, injured security guard Khokon Sheikh was admitted to Jamurki Upazila Health Complex. Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Faridul Islam said Khokon Sheikh suffered a head injury and received stitches.

Mirzapur Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Ramiz Raihan said the body was recovered and sent to Tangail General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

Mirzapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdullah Al Mamun said preliminary information suggested that Shukur Ali attempted to enter the facility with the intention of theft.

“He died after being beaten by local people. There are four previous cases against him in different police stations related to theft allegations,” the OC said.

However, police have not yet confirmed whether the incident was an organized robbery attempt.

The OC added that the matter is being investigated to determine the actual circumstances and verify the involvement of others.
