India endured a dismal batting display in the series-deciding Test at The Oval. Crumbling under the pace attack of Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue on a green-top wicket, the team was bowled out for just 224 runs in their first innings. The standout performer for England was right-arm pacer Atkinson, who picked up 5 wickets for just 33 runs. Tongue chipped in with 3 wickets.
India resumed Day 2 on 204 for 6, with hopes of putting up a big total. However, those hopes were dashed quickly in the day’s second over. Karun Nair, who was batting on 57, was trapped LBW by an in-swinger from Josh Tongue. Nair immediately realized his fate after the ball struck his pad but still opted for a review, seemingly just for formality.
Following Nair’s dismissal, India’s innings fell apart. In the very next over, Washington Sundar, who had looked to be India’s next hope, departed for 26. He attempted a pull shot off a short delivery from Atkinson, only to offer a catch. Notably, this was the third time in the series that Sundar was dismissed playing a pull or hook shot. Across five innings, he has managed just 17 runs from such strokes.
The tailenders couldn’t resist either—Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna failed to open their accounts. India's innings came to an end in 69.4 overs for 224 runs. On Day 2, they could add only 20 runs, facing just 34 deliveries.
Atkinson’s five-wicket haul now stands as the second-best bowling performance by an English pacer against India at The Oval. The best still belongs to Gubby Allen, who took 7 wickets for 80 runs.
Atkinson and Tongue will have to shoulder more responsibility going forward, especially with pace-bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes ruled out of this crucial Test due to injury.
Score Summary:
India 1st innings: 224 all out (Karun Nair 57, Sai Sudharsan 38; Gus Atkinson 5/33, Josh Tongue 3/57)
Day 2 contribution: 20 runs, 4 wickets
All out: in 69.4 overs
Collapse: 4 wickets lost in just 34 deliveries
India’s batting failure at The Oval may come at a high cost. The spotlight now turns to their bowlers—can they step up to keep the team’s hopes alive?
