Although Barcelona reclaimed the league title last season, they failed to win the Champions League. This season, players like Yamal, Pedri, and Raphinha aimed to capture Europe’s top crown. They started the season impressively and even topped the La Liga points table under coach Hans Flick. However, that dominance did not last long.
After losing at home to PSG in the Champions League, Barcelona faced Sevilla on Sunday night and suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat, dropping to second place in the league table. Robert Lewandowski missed a penalty and the team struggled against Sevilla’s high-line defense.
For Sevilla, defeating the defending champions at Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán was a moment of pure emotion. It was Sevilla’s first La Liga victory over Barcelona since 2015 and also their largest win against the Catalan giants. With this defeat, Barcelona’s 19-match unbeaten streak in La Liga came to an end.
Even on this disappointing day, Barcelona achieved a record. The Catalan club has now scored in 45 consecutive competitive matches. Yamal and Raphinha alone have found the net 127 times in these 45 matches. Previously, from November 1942 to February 1944, Barcelona scored a record 139 goals in the same period.
The sudden dip in Barcelona’s form is attributed to injuries to key players and overconfidence. Important players like Yamal, Raphinha, Gavi, and García are currently sidelined with injuries. It appears that, like their supporters, the players had begun to see themselves as the world’s best club. However, these injuries remind them of the reality.
German mastermind Hans Flick believes this painful defeat will serve as motivation for the rest of the season. He said, “Today’s hardship will inspire us for the rest of the season. We play for an incredible club and understand the fans’ disappointment. But we must look ahead and fight for every trophy.”
Regarding the loss to Sevilla, the Barcelona boss added, “We didn’t find solutions in the first half. We played better in the second half, but Sevilla capitalized on their chances. After this loss, it’s crucial for us to stay united. After the international break, we will fight for every title again.”
Barcelona will return to action on October 18 against Girona after the international break.
