At Barishal University, protesting students ended their hunger strike after receiving written assurances from the Vice-Chancellor. On Friday, September 5, around 9:30 PM, after nearly 25 hours, Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Toufiq Alam personally offered juice to the students to break their fast. During this, he embraced the students.
The hunger strike began on Thursday, September 4, at 10 PM, when seven students sat on a sit-in hunger strike in the basement of Academic Building-1. Shortly after the strike started, the Vice-Chancellor attempted to persuade the students to end it but was initially unsuccessful. He stayed with the students throughout the night.
The final agreement between the Vice-Chancellor and the students included the following points:
PD Appointment and Feasibility Study: After appointing the project director, the feasibility study will be completed within six months.
Bus Crisis Resolution: From next Tuesday, bus seat shortages on various routes will be assessed, and additional buses will be arranged as needed.
Ambulance Addition: The application for necessary approval to purchase another ambulance will be submitted to the relevant ministry by Sunday.
Land Reassessment: The reassessment of land allocated for the university will be completed within 15 working days.
While breaking the strike, the Vice-Chancellor told the students, “I am trying my utmost, but there are some limitations. If I cannot fulfill the demands, I will resign from my position.” He urged the students to continue trusting him.
