Apple has unveiled a new security technology called Memory Integrity Enforcement (MIE) for its iPhone 17 and iPhone Air devices. The company claims this technology is specifically designed to protect against spyware developers and phone forensic device users.
MIE primarily prevents memory corruption bugs, which are a common target for spyware developers. Security experts say this technology could make the iPhone one of the most secure smartphones in the world.
Professor Jiska Klassen of Germany’s Hasso Plattner Institute explained that once MIE is active on the new iPhones, many existing exploits used by spyware companies will no longer work, significantly increasing their cost and effort.
Matthias Frielingsdorf of iVerify said, “MIE will enhance user security because if any unauthorized access attempt occurs, the app will crash and generate a log, helping identify attacks.”
MIE will be enabled by default across all system apps, including Safari and iMessage. However, third-party apps must implement MIE independently.
Security experts believe this is a critical step in protecting users from spyware, zero-day exploits, and phone unlocking hardware attacks, though they caution that some attackers may still find limited ways to bypass it.
Overall, MIE provides a strong layer of security for iPhone users and represents a major advancement in Apple’s ongoing security development.
