E-commerce giant Amazon has instructed Perplexity to remove its agentic browser ‘Comet’ from its online store. Both companies confirmed the matter publicly.
Perplexity claimed that Comet operates under user instructions and thus automatically has “equal permission,” so identifying itself as an agent was unnecessary. Amazon countered that third-party agents acting on behalf of humans must clearly identify themselves.
Amazon stated that this rule applies to other cases like food delivery apps, travel bookings, and online services. If Perplexity allows Comet to operate without identification, Amazon could block it due to conflicts with its own shopping bot, Rufus.
Perplexity argued that Amazon’s decision sets a precedent for AI agent companies, emphasizing that agents must identify themselves and respect the website’s rules. This development is an important step for the future of AI-based shopping systems.
