A rare and heartbreaking coincidence of joy and grief occurred when Palestinian woman Amal Sobeih gave birth to her child on the same day her husband, Yahya Sobeih, was killed in an Israeli airstrike last year on May 7.

According to local sources, Yahya took his wife to the hospital early in the morning. Their third child, a baby girl named Sana, was delivered through surgery. After the birth, he spent a few hours with his wife and newborn daughter at the hospital, holding the baby and sharing the joy with family members.

The family said Yahya later stepped outside for a short time, saying he would return soon. However, during that time, he was killed in an Israeli airstrike on a commercial area in Gaza City. At least 17 other people were also killed and many were injured in that attack.

Yahya was a journalist by profession. He worked during the war and had even shared a photo of his newborn daughter on social media.

Amal said she learned about her husband’s death while she was still in the hospital. She became suspicious after noticing unusual behaviour around her, and later confirmed the news online. She said, “I kept calling him again and again, but there was no response. Then I saw the terrible news.”

According to the family, Yahya had spent a few hours with his newborn daughter before his death and had lovingly introduced her to everyone.

After the incident, Amal was emotionally devastated but is now trying to survive while raising her three children. She said she was displaced due to the war and had to move to a shelter camp in southern Gaza.

She is reportedly now working in the same media organization as her husband. She said she must stay strong for her children, although her husband’s absence can never be replaced.

Their youngest daughter Sana, whose birthday is also the day of her father’s death, has become the most emotional symbol in the family. Amal said, “When I look at her face, I see many things of her father.”

Observers say this heartbreaking story once again highlights the severe humanitarian crisis caused by the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
