Zohraan Mamdani Makes History in U.S. Politics, Faces Sharp Attack from Trump

PNN International Desk (AFP):  Indian-origin politician Zohran Mamdani has made history in American politics by winning the Democratic Party primary for Mayor of New York City in a landslide. If elected, the 33-year-old will become the youngest-ever and the first Muslim mayor in New York City’s history.

Mamdanī’s primary victory marks a significant moment for representation in American urban politics and signals growing progressive momentum within the Democratic Party's urban base. However, the win has sparked a barrage of attacks from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who mocked Mamdani’s appearance, voice, and intelligence in a series of posts on his social media platform, Truth Social.

In one post, Trump wrote: "Zohran Mamdani is a 100% insane communist who has now won the Democratic primary for Mayor. We’ve seen far-left radicals before, but this is just ridiculous. He looks frightening, has an annoying voice, and clearly lacks intelligence." In another post, Trump mocked Democratic lawmakers who support Mamdani, singling out Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of Mamdani’s most prominent backers. He also targeted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, sarcastically referring to him as: “Our great Palestinian Senator,” and claimed Schumer is “following Mamdani around like a lost puppy.”

Who is Zohran Mamdani?

Zohran Mamdani is currently a New York State Assembly Member and a well-known figure in the Democratic Socialists of America. He has been an outspoken advocate for housing justice, climate reform, and Palestinian rights—stances that have brought him both praise and controversy. His candidacy has drawn strong support from younger and more progressive Democratic voters, particularly among minority communities. With this primary win, Mamdani now heads into the general mayoral election as the official Democratic nominee, making him the frontrunner in a city where Democrats overwhelmingly dominate. Analysts believe Mamdani’s rise reflects a deeper generational shift within the Democratic Party. His campaign, focused on social equity, anti-war policies, and systemic reform, directly challenges the centrist and establishment wings of the party.

But Trump’s fiery rhetoric may signal how Republicans plan to nationalize the New York mayoral race, using Mamdani’s image to warn of a "radical left" takeover. As the election approaches, observers predict a highly polarized and media-intensive campaign, with national implications far beyond New York City.
