A Tom Cruise movie usually raises audience expectations for action, excitement and breathtaking stunts. This time, however, that familiar formula has failed to deliver the expected results. Following its release, Digger, an unconventional film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, has struggled to attract audiences at the box office. Despite substantial investments in production and promotion, the movie's earnings have been disappointing, prompting discussion across the film industry about the possibility of significant financial losses.

Various reports have identified several factors behind the film's disappointing performance. These include its enormous budget, weak opening-weekend earnings, promotional campaigns that failed to clearly communicate the story's nature and a departure from Tom Cruise's familiar on-screen image.

According to production-related information, Digger cost an estimated $150 million to $180 million to produce. An additional approximately $100 million was spent on marketing and promotion. This brings the total investment in the film to between $250 million and $280 million.

To recover such a substantial investment, the movie was estimated to need worldwide ticket sales of between $300 million and $350 million. However, following its release, the film's earnings fell far short of that target. As a result, uncertainty about whether the investment could be recovered emerged almost immediately.

In North America, Digger earned only $8 million during its opening weekend. For a movie starring a globally recognised actor such as Tom Cruise, this figure was significantly below expectations.

Action-packed sequences and dangerous stunts are usually among the main attractions of Cruise's films. However, Digger places greater emphasis on an unconventional storyline and a different style of presentation rather than the familiar elements audiences associate with the actor. Its weak opening-weekend attendance also negatively affected its subsequent box-office performance.

The film's marketing strategy has also come under scrutiny. Critics have suggested that some potential viewers were unable to form a clear understanding of the storyline or the movie's central appeal after watching its promotional trailers and other marketing materials.

The difference between Digger and Tom Cruise's familiar action movies is also believed to have influenced audience expectations. When a film's intended experience is not communicated clearly to viewers, even the presence of a major star may not be enough to draw audiences into cinemas. Analysts believe a similar situation may have developed with Digger.

Through the Mission: Impossible franchise and several other action films, Tom Cruise has built a distinct audience base. In Digger, however, he portrays Digger Rockwell, an eccentric oil businessman. The film leans towards political satire and a character-driven narrative featuring an unconventional protagonist. Cruise's appearance was also significantly altered with the help of prosthetic makeup to suit the character.

This role represents a departure from Cruise's established screen persona. Although such a performance offers him an opportunity to demonstrate his versatility as an actor, analysts believe the difference between the film's approach and the kind of entertainment audiences typically expect from him may have become an obstacle to its commercial success.

Critical responses to Digger have been mixed. The film received a grade of C+ from CinemaScore, while its IMDb rating stands at 7.5. These figures suggest that although the movie has faced negative reactions, it has also found acceptance among a section of viewers.

However, ticket sales in North America dropped significantly during the second weekend after its release. For big-budget films, initial marketing is only one part of the equation. Positive audience reactions and word-of-mouth recommendations also play an important role in sustaining revenue. Digger appears to have struggled to maintain that momentum.

According to recent box-office estimates, Digger has earned approximately $46.4 million worldwide. This is considerably lower than the amount spent on its production and marketing.

According to calculations by entertainment magazine Variety, the film's potential losses could range from $150 million to $245 million. Depending on the exchange rate, the upper end of that estimate could approach Tk 30 billion. However, these loss estimates are not final. Revenue from distribution rights outside cinemas, streaming agreements and other ancillary sources could alter the film's ultimate financial outcome.

Overall, the experience of Digger has once again demonstrated that a major star and an enormous budget do not guarantee commercial success. Audience expectations, the appeal of the story, the effectiveness of the promotional campaign and positive word of mouth after release all play important roles in determining a film's eventual box-office performance.
