Mutual Trust Is Essential When Performing Intimate Scenes: Michael Douglas

Oscar-winning actor Michael Douglas has spoken about his experiences filming intimate scenes in Hollywood movies. According to him, mutual trust, clear communication and consent between actors are the most important elements when shooting such scenes. He also stressed the importance of ensuring that co-stars feel comfortable throughout the process.

The 82-year-old actor shared his experiences during a recent discussion at 92NY in New York. The event was hosted by Josh Horowitz, presenter of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Douglas participated in the discussion as part of the promotional activities surrounding the release of his memoir, One Helluva Ride.

Douglas has experience filming intimate scenes in movies such as Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction and Disclosure. However, when he began his career, intimacy coordinators—the professionals who help ensure safety, consent and appropriate boundaries during intimate scenes—were not commonly involved in film productions as they are today. During the discussion, he was asked how such scenes were filmed back then.

In response, Douglas said that filming intimate scenes for movies was not an easy task. He emphasised that mutual trust between the actors was the most important factor.

While explaining the filming process, he compared it to dancing. In his view, everything needs to be planned in advance, the actors must communicate with each other, and they need to understand what makes their co-stars comfortable or uncomfortable.

According to Douglas, it is essential to obtain a co-star's consent even before touching them during a scene. The actors must also be clearly informed about how the scene will be filmed. He compared the entire process to choreographing a fight sequence. First, every movement is carefully planned and rehearsed step by step. Only after that is the sequence performed in front of the camera.

Douglas also discussed the working environment of earlier film productions. He said it was particularly important to ensure that female performers felt comfortable on sets dominated by men. Since most members of the production crew were men, he tried to pay attention to the comfort and well-being of his female co-stars.

Today, consent, safety and professional boundaries have become much more prominent topics in discussions about filming intimate scenes in the movie industry. Douglas's experiences also highlight that such scenes involve more than acting alone; they require mutual respect and a strong sense of responsibility.

In his memoir, One Helluva Ride, Douglas has shared various personal experiences from his life. The book includes accounts of his past romantic relationships, his struggles with drug use and his experiences growing up in Hollywood as the son of legendary actor Kirk Douglas.

Explaining why he chose to reveal difficult periods of his life in the book, Douglas said people generally try to forget painful memories. However, he did not want to conceal his experiences because he wanted his grandchildren to know the complete story of his life.

Although he initially felt somewhat concerned about disclosing sensitive aspects of his personal life, the actor believes readers have responded positively to his openness and willingness to discuss difficult subjects.

The discussion also touched on the 25-year age difference between Douglas and his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones. Douglas revealed that his wife had not previously known every detail of the past events described in his memoir. He also mentioned that she had received the book only recently. However, he explained that some of the experiences included in the memoir took place before he met Catherine.
