US autonomous vehicle maker Wemo is rolling out a software update for its robo-taxis to handle traffic lights more efficiently during power outages. The decision follows incidents in San Francisco where multiple robo-taxis were stuck at intersections during a major blackout.

Wemo’s software treats powerless traffic lights as four-way stop signs. However, in reality, many robo-taxis sent a “confirmation check” to Wemo’s fleet response team before moving, causing traffic jams when outages affected large areas simultaneously.

The update will include regional blackout information, improved decision-making algorithms, and updated emergency response protocols. Wemo stated that despite the videos circulating online, its vehicles successfully crossed over 7,000 non-functional traffic signals during the blackout.

Experts say such incidents highlight that even advanced autonomous technology faces real-world challenges. Previous updates were also required for school bus interactions, which had drawn attention from US national road safety authorities.
