Amid rising tensions with the United States, Venezuela has launched a three-day military exercise and showcased Russian-made fighter jets. Named “Sovereign Caribbean 200”, the exercise involves over 2,500 troops, 12 naval vessels, 22 aircraft, and around 20 boats on the Caribbean island of La Orchila.
By displaying Russian Sukhoi Su-30 MK2 fighter jets, Venezuela highlighted its anti-ship missile capabilities. Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino framed the drill and air show as a response to the deployment of U.S. warships in the region.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro claimed that the deployment of U.S. warships is primarily aimed at “regime change” and warned, “No empire will set foot on Venezuela’s sacred soil.”
The exercises began at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump reported that three boats transporting drugs from Venezuela had been destroyed in the Caribbean.
The military drill and aircraft display have heightened international tensions, drawing particular attention to Venezuela’s growing military capabilities with Russian support.
