In Jajira Upazila of Shariatpur, two consecutive murders occurred over a dispute regarding the broadcasting of the Adhan (call to prayer) through the mosque’s microphone. Following the killing of BNP leader Khobir Sardar on Wednesday, the next day, Thursday night, police recovered the body of Almas Sardar, the main accused in the case, wrapped in a sack.

The body was found buried near an abandoned house in the Umrdi Madbarkandi area of Barkandi Union around 11 PM on Thursday, 28 August. Locals noticed the foul smell and informed the police, who then recovered the body and sent it to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital morgue. The deceased’s family identified the body as Almas Sardar.

OC of Jajira Police Station, Mainul Islam, said, “The body of Almas Sardar, the main accused in the Khobir Sardar murder case, has been recovered. Legal action will be taken after autopsy.”

For context, on Tuesday night around 9 PM, Khobir Sardar, joint convener of the Union BNP, was killed over the Adhan dispute. Almas Sardar had been named the prime suspect in that case. Locals allege that tensions arose because of attempts to stop the Adhan and sermons at the mosque, leading to Khobir Sardar’s murder.

The two deaths over consecutive days have created widespread fear in the area. Villagers say they now feel insecure as a minor religious issue escalated into violent bloodshed.
