The highly anticipated film “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has created the possibility of making new history at the US box office on its opening day. Box office analysts estimate that including preview screenings, the film’s first-day earnings could reach between $167 million and $173 million.
If the early prediction proves accurate, the new Spider-Man movie could break the record currently held by “Avengers: Endgame” for the highest first-day earnings of all time.
Released in 2019, Avengers: Endgame earned approximately $157.4 million on its opening day.
According to information available until Friday afternoon, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is being screened in 4,487 cinemas across North America. Analysts predict that the film could earn more than $330 million during its opening weekend.
If achieved, the movie could become the second-highest opening weekend earner in North American box office history.
Currently, the second position is held by “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which earned around $261 million during its first weekend.
However, the biggest discussion surrounding the movie is whether it can challenge the opening weekend record of Avengers: Endgame.
Endgame still holds the record for the highest opening weekend in North America, earning approximately $357.1 million over three days.
Some box office analysts believe that if the current momentum continues, Spider-Man: Brand New Day could threaten that record.
However, Sony Pictures, the distributor of the film, has not made any official prediction regarding breaking the record.
Excluding preview earnings, Friday’s main revenue is expected to be between $95 million and $100 million.
If that pace continues, the film’s three-day total could approach around $342 million. However, if Friday’s final earnings increase further, Endgame’s opening weekend record could face a serious challenge.
Before the official opening, the film earned approximately $72 million from Wednesday special screenings and Thursday previews combined.
According to box office data, this has created a new record for the highest preview earnings in Hollywood history.
Previously, the record belonged to Avengers: Endgame, which earned around $60 million from preview screenings.
Audience reactions have also been strongly positive toward the new Spider-Man film.
According to early data from survey company PostTrak, the movie received the highest five-star rating from general audiences, parents, and children.
Meanwhile, although the massive success of Spider-Man has affected the earnings of other films, Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” continues to maintain a strong position at the box office.
During its third weekend, the film is expected to earn around $52 million, bringing its total North American earnings close to $400 million.
Box office analysts believe that not only Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but the entire North American movie market could create a new record.
The total weekend earnings of all films combined are projected to reach between $407 million and $412 million.
If this prediction becomes reality, it would surpass the previous record of approximately $402 million, achieved when Avengers: Endgame was released in 2019.
The story of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” takes place four years after the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
At the end of the previous film, the entire world forgot that Peter Parker was Spider-Man. In the new story, Peter begins a completely new life alone in a different reality.
Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker, while Zendaya returns as MJ. Popular actress Sadie Sink appears as a new antagonist in the film.
If the strong opening earnings and positive audience response continue, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” could become one of the biggest opening films not only among superhero movies but also in North American box office history.
