PNN International Desk | June 21, 2025: As tensions in the Middle East continue to rise, Russia has issued a strong warning against any potential U.S. military intervention in the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told reporters that U.S. involvement at this stage would be extremely dangerous and could result in unforeseen and severe consequences for the region.
The warning came shortly after a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, during which both leaders condemned Israel’s military aggression. According to Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s foreign policy advisor, Moscow and Beijing strongly believe that the conflict must be resolved through political and diplomatic means, not war.
Russia, which has long played a strategic role in the Middle East, is increasingly concerned about its diminishing influence following the fall of Syria’s Assad regime last year and Israel’s continued offensive in Gaza.
Meanwhile, addressing questions about military aid to Iran, President Putin clarified during a press briefing in St. Petersburg that Iran has not requested any military assistance from Russia since the conflict began. He added, “Our Iranian friends have not sought military help.” When asked how Russia would respond if Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei were assassinated, Putin declined to comment, indicating that such discussions are “not appropriate at this time.”
The joint statement and cautious diplomacy from Russia and China appear to signal their intent to counterbalance Western military escalation in the region while urging a negotiated solution to avoid a broader regional war.
