Staff Reporter | PNN:
In the 1980s and 1990s, the underworld had a terrifying influence on Bollywood. Mafia figures financed productions, and even stars faced threats. While many remained silent out of fear, actress Preity Zinta was an exception.

During the release of the 2001 film Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, rumors circulated that underworld don Chhota Shakeel had invested in the movie. When this came to light, the police seized the film prints, and panic spread throughout the industry. During this time, several artists, including Preity Zinta, received threatening phone calls, but most stars stayed quiet. Preity, however, chose a different path.

When the case went to court, she stepped forward alone to testify. Explicitly naming the gang, she told the court that she had received direct phone calls demanding money. Due to her courageous action, the police arrested the financier Bharat Shah and producer Nazim Rizvi.

In Bollywood history, Preity’s stance is seen as a rare example where an actress became a symbol of bravery not only on the screen but also in real life.
