A case has finally been filed in the sensational murder of Pir Abdur Rahman alias Shamim Jahangir in Daulatpur, Kushtia. Four people have been named in the case, along with 180 to 200 unidentified individuals.
On Monday (13 April) at around 10:30 pm, the deceased’s elder brother Fazlur Rahman filed the case at Daulatpur Police Station.
Kushtia District Police Additional Superintendent (Crime and Ops) Faisal Mahmud confirmed the matter and said that operations are underway to identify and arrest those involved. He also said that the cause of the incident and those involved are being investigated.
He further said that additional police have been deployed in the area after the incident and the situation is currently under control.
According to police and local sources, tension arose in the Filippur area of Daulatpur after a short video circulated on social media. Following the video, discussions and controversies spread rapidly in the area from Friday night to the following morning.
By Saturday at 9 am, law enforcement became aware of the situation. Later at 11 am, police took position in the Dargah area. However, although the situation was initially under control, it suddenly turned violent at 2:36 pm.
At that time, over a hundred people entered the shrine premises armed with local weapons and carried out attacks and vandalism. During the attack, Pir Abdur Rahman alias Shamim Jahangir was beaten and attacked with sharp weapons. He died shortly after being taken to the hospital while treatment had just begun.
After post-mortem, his funeral was held on Sunday afternoon at the Rajapara Eidgah ground in West South Filippur of Filippur Union. He was later buried in the local graveyard.
It is notable that although the family initially indicated they would not file a case, they eventually proceeded with legal action.
