South African Defense Chief General Rudzani Maphwanya has come under criticism in his own country for remarks made during his visit to Iran. Analysts say the incident could further complicate South Africa’s already tense relationship with the United States.

During a meeting last Tuesday in Tehran with Iran’s Chief of Staff, Major General Sayyed Abdur Rahim Mousavi, Maphwanya highlighted the “shared military goals and common positions” between the two countries. According to Iranian state media Press TV and Tehran Times, the South African defense chief also recalled South Africa’s past support for Iran’s anti-apartheid movement, stating, “This relationship has created a lasting bond between the two countries.”

He further claimed that South Africa and Iran have always stood “with the world’s oppressed and helpless people.” At the same time, he strongly condemned attacks on civilians in Gaza and the West Bank by Israel.

Referring to the political significance of the visit, Maphwanya said, “There could not be a better time to express support for the peace-loving people of Iran.”

Meanwhile, Iran’s Chief of Staff Mousavi praised South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court and described it as aligned with Iran’s policies.

According to analysts, the public remarks by the defense chief at this time could deal a significant blow to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s efforts to mend relations with the United States. This comes as the U.S. administration recently imposed a 30% tariff on South African exports, causing concern among the country’s business community.
