Abdul Wahed, the Dhaka University Vice President (DU VP) candidate and convener of the Revolutionary Students’ Council, was attacked following clashes and unrest at Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall at Dhaka University. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, August 26, around 2:30 a.m.
Wahed is a student of the 2016-17 session of the Arabic Department and a resident of Masterda Surya Sen Hall.
According to sources, the conflict began in one of the rooms at Mohsin Hall when two students got into an argument, which escalated into a clash. One student was injured and taken to the hospital. Following the incident, other agitated students surrounded the room of the involved student.
To prevent the situation from worsening, Abdul Wahed posted a status on Facebook urging the students to remain calm. He wrote, “If any student ends up in a suicidal situation, who will take responsibility?” He also called for lawful action with the presence of the university administration and law enforcement.
However, some enraged students, learning about Wahed’s stance and the fact that he had recorded videos, attacked him. Wahed was seriously injured, and the attackers took his mobile phone, deleting the videos and photos.
Abdul Wahed said, “I tried to explain to the students that taking the law into their own hands is not a solution. Despite this, I was publicly beaten. I demand the arrest of the attackers and their expulsion from the university.”
He also warned, “If mob culture takes root again at DU, the consequences will be severe.”
The university administration has not yet released an official statement, but it has been confirmed that the proctorial team and police were present at the time of the incident.
