Severe rainfall and flash floods across Pakistan over the past week have left at least 46 people dead and several others injured, according to the country’s official authorities on Monday.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and provincial emergency departments confirmed that the unusual intensity of the monsoon rains has led to this tragic toll. Of the 46 fatalities, 22 occurred in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, 13 in the eastern Punjab region, seven in the southern province of Sindh, and four in southwestern Balochistan.

Pakistan Meteorological Department Deputy Director Irfan Virk told the Associated Press that the current monsoon season could bring above-average rainfall. He warned that there is a looming possibility of a repeat of the 2022 flood disaster, during which one-third of Pakistan was submerged and at least 1,737 lives were lost.

Among the latest casualties are 13 members of the same family, who were swept away by strong currents while traveling near the Swat River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa last week. Out of 17 family members, four were rescued alive. Bilal Faizi, spokesperson for the provincial emergency service, reported that 12 bodies have been recovered, while rescue divers continued the search for one missing individual as of Monday.

This incident has sparked public outrage on social media over the pace and preparedness of the emergency response, with many accusing the authorities of acting too slowly.

Earlier on Sunday, the NDMA had issued a flood alert, advising people to avoid crossing rivers and streams amid ongoing extreme weather conditions.
