At Chittagong University, tensions resurfaced on campus after a controversial statement by local Jamaat-e-Islami leader Sirajul Islam went viral on social media following last week’s clashes. In the video, he said, “We are landlords; we will not tolerate interference with landlords.”

On Friday (5 September) around 2 AM, students protested near Golchattar, A F Rahman Hall, and Shahid Farhad Hossain Hall. Following the incident, Chittagong University branch of Chhatra Shibir issued a statement rejecting the Jamaat leader’s remarks.

During a discussion meeting in Jobra village, Sirajul Islam reportedly said, “Chittagong University is our ancestral property. If our respect is not maintained, we will take necessary measures with the people.” Chhatra Shibir condemned his statement, describing it as an attempt to cover up the misdeeds of local militants.

Chhatra Shibir leader Habibullah Khaled tried to explain the actual situation of the clash during the meeting. However, the Chhatra Shibir statement noted that he could not fully clarify the matter.

It is noted that on 30 August, clashes erupted near Gate 2 of the university between students and local residents. The situation escalated over allegations of assault on a female student. The clashes left Vice-Chancellor Professor Md. Kamal Uddin, Proctor Professor Tanvir Haider Arif, and at least 200 students injured. Additionally, 10–12 local residents were injured, and a case was filed.
