Following BNP’s nomination announcement, internal disputes in Kushtia-1 (Daulatpur) have turned violent. Supporters of Sharif Uddin Jewel, convener of BNP’s Dhaka Metropolitan Jubo Dal, allegedly attacked houses and local offices of supporters of another faction led by Daulatpur Upazila BNP president Reza Ahmed Bacchu Molla.
Local sources report the attack occurred Monday night, resulting in fires at several offices and injuring at least three people.
In protest, Jewel’s supporters held a rally at Daulatpur Government Pilot Model Secondary School grounds on Tuesday afternoon. They later marched through Thana Bazar to Center More.
Speakers at the rally accused Bacchu Molla’s supporters of disorderly conduct following the nominations, taunting Jewel’s followers, and creating fear with grenade explosions at night.
Rezaur Rahman, secretary of Daulatpur Upazila Jubo Dal, said, “Three grenade explosions occurred at my house in succession. My family is terrified. It’s unfortunate that one has to worry about safety while doing politics.” He demanded a proper investigation and punishment for the perpetrators.
BNP candidate Reza Ahmed Bacchu Molla could not be reached for comment. However, he had told local reporters after the nomination announcement: “Party decisions are final. Everyone must unite under the Dhanya Sheesh symbol. Strict action will be taken against troublemakers.”
A local police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said tension remains in the area and extra police have been deployed. “The investigation is ongoing, and legal action will be taken if evidence is found,” he added.
Some local BNP leaders believe the conflict stems from a lack of transparency in the central nomination process and competition among local leaders. They fear such violence may further weaken the party organization before the elections.
