Ahead of the upcoming 13th national parliamentary elections, the National Citizens Party (NCP) is leaning more toward seat-sharing with the BNP. The party has already maintained informal contacts with BNP and reportedly proposed seat-sharing in at least 20 constituencies.

Party sources say that NCP is not only seeking seat allocation but also hopes to participate in a potential BNP-led government. According to sources, there have been discussions about including at least three NCP leaders in the cabinet if BNP comes to power.

However, the matter is still at an informal stage. BNP leaders are currently not ready to make any commitments and have advised NCP to distance itself from Jamaat-e-Islami.

Meanwhile, Jamaat has also shown interest in NCP. However, some senior NCP leaders say the party wants to establish itself as a “centrist” political force rather than a “right-wing” one.

NCP has already formed its central election management committee. Nasiruddin Patwari has been appointed as the chief coordinator, and Tasnim Zara as secretary. Party convener Nahid Islam said, “We are keeping the possibility of alliance or understanding open with those whose positions align with our ideals and core demands.”

Sources say Nahid Islam is preparing to contest from Dhaka-11, Akhtar Hossain from Rangpur-4, and Tasnim Zara from Dhaka-9. Over fifty other central leaders have also expressed interest in contesting in their respective areas.

At the same time, the party is preparing to participate independently in the elections. NCP joint convener Monira Sharmin said, “Currently, we are prioritizing strengthening organizational capacity over election alliances. A final decision will be made based on the situation.”

The party estimates that it currently holds strong positions in at least four to five constituencies. In some of these, Jamaat may also provide support to NCP.

Overall, NCP is moving forward on two fronts—potential alliance with BNP and preparation for independent participation. The final decision will come after the Election Commission announces the schedule, when the political landscape becomes clearer.
