A tragic road accident claimed the lives of five members of the same family in Chakaria Upazila on the Cox’s Bazar-Chattogram highway. The accident occurred around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, November 5, near the south of Fashiakhali Hansher Dighi army camp.
Eyewitnesses reported that a passenger bus heading to Chattogram collided head-on with a microbus coming from the opposite direction to Cox’s Bazar. The microbus was completely crushed in the collision, killing five people on the spot, including four women and a child. Two others were injured and admitted to different hospitals in Chakaria.
Malumghat Highway Police OC Mehedi Hasan said, “Police arrived at the scene and conducted rescue operations. Both vehicles have been seized, but the drivers fled after the accident.”
The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed. Their bodies are kept at Malumghat Christian Memorial Hospital.
Local residents complained that there is no speed control system in the area, where accidents occur frequently. They have repeatedly requested speed breakers and warning signs, but no action has been taken.
Traffic was halted for nearly an hour after the accident. Police later cleared the road and restored normal traffic. Preliminary investigation indicates overspeeding and negligence as the primary causes. Authorities are preparing to hand over the bodies to relatives and have assured assistance.
