A major fire broke out at a jute warehouse in Konabari, Gazipur, damaging four warehouses in the Ambag Baburchi More area on Wednesday morning, November 5. Four fire service units took nearly two hours to control the fire.
According to the Fire Service, the fire started at Nur Shafi’s warehouse around 6:30 a.m. and quickly spread to three neighboring warehouses. One warehouse was completely destroyed, and the other three were partially damaged.
Local resident Abdus Salam said, “We rushed when we saw smoke. Before we could comprehend, the fire spread. The jute and other flammable materials made the fire very intense.”
Residents tried to extinguish the fire but failed. Later, the Konabari and Gazipur Chourasta Fire Service units collaborated and fully controlled the fire around 8:30 a.m.
Konabari Fire Service warehouse inspector Saiful Islam said, “Our four units worked at the site. The exact cause and extent of the damage are not yet known. No casualties have been reported.”
Locals said the abundance of flammable jute products accelerated the fire and caused panic. A suspect was arrested at the scene by local residents and handed over to police for questioning.
The preliminary estimated loss may be several crores of Taka. Local business owners urged the authorities to provide immediate assistance to the victims.
